Contribution to the knowledge of flora and vegetation of Krissi islet (Crete,SE Mediterranean sea)

The results of a floristic and vegetational investigation on the Aegean islet of Krissi are presented. Its vascular flora numbers 172 taxa (species, subspecies and hybrids), 92 of which are new records. A species new to science, Limonium chrissianum, is described and illustrated and two new combinations, Limonium roridum and Teucrium dumulosum, are proposed. Furthermore, an iconography of the fruited Bupleurum gaudianum, a rare endemic known up to now only from the islet of Gaudos is provided. The phytosociological analysis identifies 8 associations, including relevés of maquis, phrygana, salt marshes, psammophilous and rupicolous vegetation. Le indagini archeologiche nella città di Gortina hanno riportato in luce alcuni capitelli ionici di modello microasiatico in marmo importato, databili alla seconda metà del II sec. d.C., ma anche un gran numero di capitelli ionici in marmo grigio locale, con ogni evidenza prodotti in loco tra la fine del II e gli inizi del III sec. d.C. Si tratta di membrature riutilizzate in edifici più tardi e spesso reimpiegate come materiale da costruzione o rifunzionalizzate in vari modi. Im venetianisch besetzten Kreta des 14.Jhs. zeigen sich vermehrt westliche Einflüsse in Ikonographie und Stil auf den Wandmalereien der byzantinischen Kirchen. Auch szenische Neuschöpfungen werden vereinzelt in das traditionelle, festgelegte Bildprogramm aufgenommen. So auch in der Soter-Kirche in Kephali auf Kreta (Präfektur Chania, Bezirk Kissamos). Dort gibt es zwei bis heute nicht eindeutig entschlüsselte, enigmatische Szenen. Durch methodische Arbeitsschritte der typologischen Zuordnung und der Eingliederung in das Gefüge der gesamten Bildkomposition lassen sich diese außergewöhlichen bildlichen Darstellungen sinnvoll erklären und thematisch einordnen.

Lygeum spartum grasslands from Crete have been studied by the application of the phytosocological method. A new alliance, Scorzonero creticae-Lygeion sparti and three new associations and have been recognized. The first, Limonio hyssopifolii-Lygeetum sparti occurs on halomorphyc badlands in the Sitia territory (NE Crete); the second Erodio crassifolii-Lygeetum sparti grows on heavily eroded clayey outcrops close to Hyerapetra (SE Crete); the third Convolvulo oleifolii-Lygeetum sparti, substitutes the previous one some Km eastward from Hyerapetra, on stratified marls alternated to conglomerates. The paper deals with the category of the “statua - rischen Idealporträts”, treating the few specimens until now recognizable within the large corpus of Roman sculptures collected in the city of Gortyn at Crete. A high-quality example of Hadrianic age was found by Prof. Antonino Di Vita, head of the large scale excavations in the site, during the 1988–1990 field season in the area NW of the “Praetorium”, adjoining the Caput aquae of the Roman aqueduct. Marine protected areas (MPAs), when designated correctly and managed well, provide a plethora of conservation benefits for current and future generations (i.e. increased habitat heterogeneity at the seascape level, increased abundance of threatened species and habitats, and maintenance of a full range of genotypes).
